Overseas Community Project (OCP)

The Overseas Community Project is managed by the students from Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and is participated by students from Le Quy Don High School in Vietnam. In this exchange program, the students from TP are the facilitators of the project and have developed course materials on the 7 Dimensions of culture which will be delivered to the Vietnamese students during the exchange program.

Breakout rooms are conducted to allow the Vietnamese students to reinforce the concepts they have just learnt while providing TP students and Vietnamese students more opportunities to interact with one another to know each other better.

7 Dimensions of Culture (7D)

The 7 Dimensions of Culture Model is also known as the Trompenaars Cultural Dimensions Model. It works by differentiating cultures based on their preferences in the following 7 dimensions:

Dimension 1: Universalism vs Particularism (Measures how culture view rules, define fairness)

Universalism: Abide by the rules strictly, regardless of the reason or situation when making a decision.

Particularism: Exceptions can be made due to circumstances during decision making.

Dimension 2: individualism vs Communitarianism (Measures how culture organise people)

Individualism: Believe that success/failure depends on one's own effort and each individual should look after themselves first.

Communitarianism: Believe that success/failure depends on team effort effort and each individual should look after one another first.

Dimension 3: Neutral vs Affective (Measures how cultures express emotions)

Neutral: Tend to be more conservative when displaying emotions and not very expressive with their words.

Affective: Tend to be more expressive with their words and display emotions openly

Dimension 4: Specific vs Diffuse (Measures how cultures build relationships)

Specific: Believe relationships are build in separate areas, work and family are different aspects

Diffuse: Believe relationships are build over multiple connected areas, work and family are interconnected.

Dimension 5: Achievement vs Ascription (Measures how cultures give status)

Achievement: You gain/lose status for what you have done.

Ascription: You gain/lose status for who you are.

Dimension 6: Internal vs External (Measures how cultures deal with challenges)

Internal: Deals with challenges by changing the environment. Actions are taken to 'solve' the problem.

External: Deals with challenges by adapting to the environment. Changes are made ourselves to suit the problem.

Dimension 7: Sequential vs Synchronic (Measures how cultures view and manage time)

Sequential: Things are done one at a time, time schedule are fixed and it is utmost important to keep to the schedule.

Synchronic: Multiple things are done at once, time schedule are flexible, relationship and flexibility are more important.

Dimension 7: Past - Present - Future (Measures how cultures perceive time, which is more important and which is less)

Past: They tend to be more traditional, resistant to change.

Present: They see the past as passed and the future as uncertain.

Future: They view management as a matter of planning, doing and controlling as opposed to going with the flow, letting things happen.
